What is HEIC and why convert it to JPG?
What is HEIC?
HEIC — High Efficiency Image Container — is the default photo format used by iPhone and iPad since Apple introduced it with iOS 11 in 2017. It uses HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) compression to store images at roughly 40–50% smaller file sizes than JPG while maintaining the same visual quality. A photo that would be 3MB as a JPG is typically around 1.5MB as a HEIC file.
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
Despite HEIC's superior compression, it is not universally supported. Windows 10 and 11 require a paid codec to open HEIC files natively. Android devices, most web browsers, social media platforms, and the majority of image editing software do not support HEIC by default. JPG, by contrast, works on every device, operating system, and platform without any additional software — making it the universal standard for sharing, uploading, and editing photos.
Converting HEIC to JPG is the fastest way to make iPhone photos compatible with Windows PCs, Android phones, web uploads, and any platform that does not support HEIC natively.

Convert HEIC to JPG on any device
On Windows
Windows does not open HEIC files natively without a paid Microsoft codec. The fastest way to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows is to use Transfonic's free browser-based converter — open transfonic.com/image-conversion/heic-to-jpg in any browser, upload your HEIC file, and download the JPG. No software installation required, and it works on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
On iPhone or iPad
On iPhone, you can change the camera format in Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible to shoot in JPG directly. To convert existing HEIC photos to JPG, use Transfonic's HEIC to JPG converter in Safari — upload your photo from your Camera Roll and download the JPG in seconds.
On Android
Android devices cannot open HEIC files natively. To convert HEIC to JPG on Android, open Transfonic's converter in Chrome or any Android browser, upload your HEIC file, and download the converted JPG directly to your device. No app download needed.
On Mac
macOS supports HEIC natively — you can open and preview HEIC files in Photos, Preview, and Finder. To convert HEIC to JPG on Mac, open the file in Preview, go to File → Export, and choose JPEG as the format. Alternatively, use Transfonic's converter for batch context or when you need to share the JPG immediately.
HEIC to JPG quality and file size
When converting HEIC to JPG using Transfonic, the output quality is set to maximum by default. JPG uses lossy compression, which means a very small amount of image data is discarded during conversion — but at maximum quality settings, the difference is not visible to the human eye in normal viewing conditions.
The resulting JPG file will typically be 40–60% larger than the original HEIC file — this is expected and normal. HEIC's HEVC compression is significantly more efficient than JPG's compression algorithm. The larger file size does not mean lower quality; it means the same quality stored less efficiently.
Privacy: Transfonic processes all conversions over a 256-bit SSL-encrypted connection. Your HEIC file is uploaded securely, converted in the cloud, and the JPG is returned to your browser. Both the original file and the converted JPG are deleted from the server automatically once your download is complete — they are never stored, accessed, or shared.
