What is image conversion?
Image conversion is the process of changing an image file from one format to another — for example, from HEIC to JPG, or from PNG to WebP — while preserving the visual content and quality of the original.
Different image formats serve different purposes. JPG is optimised for photographs, PNG preserves transparency for logos and graphics, WebP and AVIF offer better compression for web pages, HEIC is the default format on Apple devices, and SVG is used for scalable icons and illustrations. Converting between formats is necessary when sharing files across platforms, optimising images for web performance, or preparing assets for print.
Transfonic's online image conversion tools handle all major format combinations — no software installation, no file size limits beyond 10MB per file, and no account required.
How to convert an image online
1. Select your image format
Choose the format cluster that matches your goal from the table above — for example, HEIC conversion if you're working with iPhone photos, or WebP conversion if you're optimising images for a website.
2. Upload your image
Click the upload area or drag and drop your image file. Transfonic supports JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, SVG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, and ICO files up to 10MB.
3. Download your converted file
Select your output format, click Convert, and download your file instantly. The converted image is ready in seconds — your original file is deleted automatically after processing.
Image format guide
Not every image format works for every situation. Here is a practical guide to the ten formats supported on Transfonic, including when to use each one and who typically needs to convert from or to it.
JPG — Joint Photographic Experts Group
JPG and JPEG are the same format — JPG is simply the three-letter file extension used on Windows systems, while JPEG is the four-letter version used on Mac and Linux. Both refer to the same lossy compression standard and are fully interchangeable. JPG is the most widely supported image format in the world, accepted by every browser, device, platform, and social network. → JPG image conversion
JPEG — Joint Photographic Experts Group
JPG is the most widely used format for digital photographs and web images. It uses lossy compression to reduce file sizes significantly, making it ideal for photos where a small reduction in quality is acceptable. JPG is supported by every device, browser, and platform. It does not support transparent backgrounds. Best for: photographs, social media images, email attachments. → JPEG image conversion
PNG — Portable Network Graphics
PNG is the standard format for images that require a transparent background, such as logos, icons, and graphics with clean edges. It uses lossless compression, meaning no image data is lost during saving — making it the preferred format for designers and developers who need pixel-perfect quality. Best for: logos, UI assets, screenshots, images with transparency. → PNG image conversion
WebP — Web Picture Format
WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that delivers significantly smaller file sizes than JPG and PNG without a visible loss in quality. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as transparency. Web developers and performance engineers use WebP to improve Core Web Vitals scores and reduce page load times. Best for: website images, product photos, blog content, web performance optimisation. → WebP image conversion
HEIC — High Efficiency Image Container
HEIC is the default photo format on iPhone and iPad devices running iOS 11 and later. It stores images at roughly half the file size of JPG while maintaining the same visual quality, using the HEVC compression standard. Because HEIC is not natively supported on Windows or many Android devices, converting HEIC to JPG is one of the most common image conversion tasks. Best for: Apple device users who need to share photos with non-Apple devices or platforms. → HEIC image conversion
AVIF — AV1 Image File Format
AVIF is the newest high-efficiency image format, offering better compression than both WebP and JPG at equivalent quality levels. It is based on the AV1 video codec and supports HDR, wide colour gamut, and transparency. Browser support has grown rapidly since 2021, and performance engineers increasingly choose AVIF for images that must load as fast as possible. Best for: web-performance-critical images, high-DPI displays, modern browsers. → AVIF image conversion
SVG — Scalable Vector Graphics
SVG is an XML-based vector format that scales to any size without loss of quality. Unlike raster formats such as JPG and PNG, SVG images are made from mathematical paths and shapes rather than pixels. They are used by designers and front-end developers for logos, icons, illustrations, and any graphic that must render sharply across screen sizes. Best for: logos, icons, infographics, illustrations, scalable UI graphics. → SVG image conversion
GIF — Graphics Interchange Format
GIF is one of the oldest web image formats, best known for supporting short animations. It uses lossless compression but is limited to a 256-colour palette, making it unsuitable for photographs. GIF remains popular for social media reactions, simple animations, and lightweight graphics. Content creators regularly convert GIF files to or from PNG and WebP. Best for: simple animations, social media content, low-colour graphics. → GIF image conversion
TIFF — Tagged Image File Format
TIFF is a high-resolution format used by photographers, print studios, and publishing professionals who require lossless image storage. TIFF files retain full image data with no compression artefacts, which makes them large but extremely high quality. They are commonly converted to JPG or PNG for digital distribution or web use. Best for: professional photography, print production, and archival image storage. → TIFF image conversion
BMP — Bitmap Image File
BMP is an uncompressed raster format native to Windows. Because BMP files store every pixel individually without compression, they produce very large file sizes. BMP is rarely used for web or sharing purposes today, but it remains relevant in legacy Windows workflows, some medical imaging software, and older design pipelines. Best for: Windows legacy workflows, uncompressed editing environments. → BMP image conversion
ICO — Icon File Format
ICO is the format used for website favicons and application icons on Windows. An ICO file can contain multiple image sizes within a single file, allowing operating systems and browsers to select the most appropriate resolution. Developers and UI designers typically convert PNG files to ICO when adding favicons to a website. Best for: website favicons, Windows desktop icons, browser tab icons. → ICO image conversion
