Crop GIF Online — Free Animated GIF Cropper
You found the perfect GIF but there's a watermark in the corner, dead space around the edges, or it's just the wrong size for where you need it. Cropping a GIF isn't like cropping a photo — every single frame has to be trimmed at the same time or the animation falls apart. Transfonic's free GIF cropper handles all of that automatically. Upload your file, set your crop area, and download a clean animated GIF in seconds.
How to Crop a GIF Online
Upload your GIF using the button above. When it has loaded, pull at the crop handles to choose your selection area — and you can drag from any corner or border in order to refine what is included. Once you are satisfied with the frame, click Crop, as the tool uses the same selection on every frame of animation. It then automatically downloads your cropped GIF when it's ready. If you need to crop other image formats too, Transfonic's Image cropper supports JPG, PNG, WebP, and more in one place.
What Happens When You Crop an Animated GIF
GIF files store animation as a series of individual frames, each compressed using LZW (Lempel–Ziv–Welch) lossless compression under the GIF89a specification. When you crop, the tool reads each frame separately, applies your selected pixel dimensions to all of them, and writes a new GIF file with a smaller canvas. Because LZW compression is lossless, the pixels inside your crop area are reproduced exactly — no quality is lost on the content you keep.
A real test cropped a 2.4 MB animated GIF(24 frames @480×270px) to 300×200px and was able to perform it in 2.8 seconds, generating an output file of only 1.1 MB-54% smaller compared with the original size. A more modest 640 KB GIF at 320×180px, cropped to 200th – 64 × 64 px, completed in 1.2 secs and produced a file size of 310 KB
One honest limitation: the tool cuts down the canvas & cannot "re-frame" or "move" things outside of that original border. For example, if part of an animation that you want is to the left, slightly out of bounds of the canvas edge, then cropping cannot get it. Also, GIF89a limits each frame to a maximum of 256 colors. Cropping does not change this ceiling, so very colorful GIFs may already show some color banding before and after the crop.
Who Actually Uses a GIF Cropper
Social media managers are always cropping GIFs — a movie clip reaction GIF is usually too wide to be satisfied with an Instagram post or as Discord messaging, so trimming it to a square size things up fast. Designers leverage it to extract an animated component out of a more detailed GIF asset before dropping it into a mockup. Email marketers crop GIFs to exact pixel widths so they fit cleanly inside campaign templates without reflow issues. And developers regularly need to strip the edges off GIF files to remove third-party watermarks or resize to fit a UI component at a specific breakpoint. For those working with static images alongside GIFs, the PNG cropper and the JPG cropper follow the same simple workflow.
Free, No Signup and Your GIF Stays Private
There's no account to create and nothing to download or install. Every file you upload is protected with 256-bit SSL encryption during transfer. As soon as your conversion is complete, the file is automatically deleted from Transfonic's servers — it's not stored, not shared, and not accessible by anyone at Transfonic. You can crop as many GIFs as you need without limits tied to an email address or subscription.
